I bought this book after a recommendation of Seth Nicholas King who talked about it on his FB page. Boy that was a recommendation for the ages! I have so, so, so thouroughly enjoyed this book. Especially in these bleak times of orange presidents and the ensuing bigotry, falsehoods and universal awfulness this is a book that gives tremendous hope, light relief and enjoyment. I can't recommend this enough, I read it in one go, took it everywhere with me. Do yourself a favour. Just read it. Ten stars out of five.
While I do love reading, it usually takes me a while to finish a book, but I rushed through this within the a couple of days. This book was everything it promises and more, and I cannot reccommend it enough if what you are looking for is a self-indulgent, hopeful and uplifting trope-fest that gives you all the cavities without crossing the line of being way over the top.The characters were lovely, and while the queer m/m romance is the main focus, I also really enjoyed the side characters and the complex other relationships - friendships, family dynamics and others which fit multiple or different categories.I am the kind of person who often reads the ending first (be it just one sentence or a couple of pages) because I have trust issues, and I need to know if a story is going to let me down in a major way because I need time to mentally prepare for that, and I can't really enjoy a book or series if I don't trust it to make me happy in some way (which doesn't have to be a happy ending, but one that fits and is satisfying based on all the character arcs and storylines set up) and my reading time is too precious to me to invest myself into something that will not leave me feeling content. Anyway, the point is, I started reading this book (from the beginning) and knew after a couple of pages that I would not have to check out the ending - I could trust the story to take me to a place I would love, and I was not mistaken. This is a feeling that I hardly ever enounter with books and I am so grateful that this book reminded me that this is a possibility.
Awesome!!! This plot could have easily been a simplistic, cheesy, one dimensional romance novel (not that there is anything wrong with that...) Instead, it is book with complex, loveable characters, amazing background information and captivating relationships. It manages to combine factual history with (unfortunately) fictional events and characters. The world McQuiston imagines may be of a "Return of the Jedi" variety, but that makes it no less intriguing. "History, hu?" I wish so much this were reality...
I love how the author managed to include the sweet addictive elements often used in fanfiction that eludesany published authors. I love it. (Even if one part was very cheesy, but to me it was part of the charm)
This story is pure joy. I cried, I laughed, I read thru the night bc I couldn't wait to find uot how the journey ended. So good. Hope to see many more books of this author!
I couldn't put this down at all! Amazing characters, hilariously funny, and with lots of real-world issues. I hope this author writes a LOT more books, I need them in my life.
Ich habe mich schon lange nicht mehr dermaßen auf ein Buch gefreut. Kaum hatte es geklingelt, habe ich es der Postbotin quasi aus der Hand gerissen, alles stehen und liegen lassen und mich in die Geschichte gestürzt. Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht! Das Buch hat mir so gut gefallen, dass ich mich zwingen musste, zwischendurch zu schlafen. Ich konnte gar nicht schnell genug lesen, sodass ich völlig vergessen habe, mir Notizen zu machen. Doch nicht nur deshalb fällt es mir schwer, meine Meinung in Worte zu fassen. Das Buch hat mich sehr begeistert und mir hat einfach alles unheimlich gut gefallen, ohne dass ich einen Aspekt besonders hervorheben könnte.In der Geschichte geht es um Alex, den Sohn der amerikanischen Präsidentin, und Henry, den Prinzen von Wales, die sich ineinander verlieben. Zwar steht Alex mit seinen politischen Ambitionen noch am Anfang seiner Karriere und Henry ist nur die Nummer 2 der Thronfolge, trotzdem hat diese heimliche Beziehung eine Menge Sprengkraft. Da in den USA Wahljahr ist, beteiligt sich Erzähler Alex an der Planung und Durchführung von Kampagnen, um seiner Mutter bei der Wiederwahl zu helfen. Das fand ich sehr interessant zu verfolgen. Ich habe wenig Ahnung vom politischen Zirkus der USA, aber es wirkte gut recherchiert. So hatte das Buch auch neben der Liebesgeschichte noch Handlung und es gab eine Menge Raum, um die politischen Auswirkungen der Beziehung der beiden jungen Männer zu beleuchten. Das war immer eine interessante Ablenkung und hat die Pausen zwischen den Treffen der beiden hervorragend gefüllt.Nichtsdestotrotz handelt es sich bei der Politik nur um schmückendes Beiwerk. Im Vordergrund steht eindeutig die Liebesgeschichte. Diese hat mir wahnsinnig gut gefallen, weil Alex und Henry eine wunderbare Chemie haben. Sie ziehen sich gegenseitig auf, treiben einander zur Weißglut und sind gleichzeitig unendlich sanft und entfachen das Beste im anderen. Ihre innige Verbindung hat mich berührt, ihre vollkommen offenen, neckenden Mails haben mich zum Lachen gebracht. Einige wenige Szenen sind herzzerreißend, wobei die Autorin auf unnötiges Drama verzichtet hat und Alex stattdessen aktiv und ehrlich an Problemlösungen arbeiten lässt. Mir haben die beiden so gut zusammen gefallen, dass ich das Buch schon ein zweites Mal quer gelesen habe.FazitDas Buch musste ich anfangen, kaum dass ich es in der Hand gehalten habe. Und es hat gehalten, was es versprochen hat! Ich bin wirklich begeistert. Die beiden Charaktere haben eine wunderbare Chemie. Es gab berührende, witzige und herzzerreißende Szenen. Untergemischt war genug Politik, um die Auswirkungen zu beleuchten, aber die tolle Liebesgeschichte stand eindeutig im Vordergrund. „Red, White & Royal Blue“ ist ein wunderbares Buch, das definitiv in die Riege meiner Lieblingsbücher aufsteigt und dafür fünf Schreibfedern bekommt.
